The Town 8

one world had exactly twenty things within it

there was a little girl called Jenny
who sometimes giggled uncontrollably

there was a naked lightbulb
that flashed on and off
every now and then
it made a bit of a buzzing sound

there was a bright orange basketball
which unfortunately was flat

there were seventeen other things
each equally worth a mention

this world seemed to get along just fine

The Town 7

they put the sea into a bathtub
- one of those old ones
with claws for legs

the bathroom started to get really crowded – especially in summer
& all the fishermen made the house smell like fish
the house’s family also had to always watch out
for artists who sneaked in
when nobody was looking
many times they woke up in the middle of the night
to find one there perched on the toilet seat
helplessly crying into the bath

they thought about getting a security system

but still, it was worth it
they could sit in the loungeroom
& listen to the roar of waves
echo off the tiles

it made them think of things

The Town 6

what about the place her bit of hair came from?

that was a beautiful place
that glowed with a soft pink light
hidden away from the noises of cars
& dinosaurs

nothing was wrong in that place
you could buy a delicious apple there
for only fifteen cents

things with pretty faces and soft black wings
flew around the place
offering happiness
at a pretty competitive price

it was never cold there
& comfort rose straight out of the ground
to warm the feet as they walked away

The Town 5

in the prison they made all the inmates
wear the latest styles
you could see them there strutting around in flares
& shiny shoes
with yellow sunglasses resting in their hair

for dinner they ate lobster most nights
often followed by a night out at the opera
during the day the guest lecturers included
noam chomsky
& someone with a french sounding name
conversation centred around the late impressionists
& the significance of the ancient rome metropolis
for contemporary western society
fragmented as it is
people had to be turned away
who claimed they committed crimes
they didn't really do
& often they found quite respectable people
trying to sneak in thru the letter slot

it wasn’t all fun & games by any means
sometimes the lobster seemed a little cold
& once the baritone almost forgot his lines

The Town 4

the brothel was the most popular house on the street

there were always pretty, slutty girls coming in & out
balanced upon wonderfully tall platform shoes
with carefully, outrageously painted faces

the older men in grey who also came in & out
were really pretty shy
& avoided conversation at first
but once you got to know them, they were really nice,
& often gave out chocolate gifts

the younger men were rowdy
& smelt of beer
but they too were really generous
& wd always try to help out anyone in need

the house had a pretty red aura
& smelt seductively of oils
everybody really liked it
it was a funny kind of neighbour house to have

The Town 3 - A MYTH OF WARNING

A MYTH OF WARNING

every tear finds its way somewhere

things swim in that place
& with every drop they grow
more hungry
& more vicious

it’s warm in that place
& of course it’s really damp

the salt would cake over a body
& eat away at its fabric

but those things get stronger there
& one day they might escape
that would be a terrible day

The Town 2

in the place where all the magic came from

a sad little fat man
was sitting on an exercise bike
his little legs pumping pumping pumping
the wheels as they had to
kept on spinning around briskly

a sympathetic business man had donated a small TV
so that he could watch Bloomberg
& check his stocks
other than that there was very little
for him to keep his balding mind occupied with

it was a hard job
& he wished that someone else could have done it

The Town 1 - REPORT

REPORT

there was a fire in the basement

and it kept on burning and burning

the fireman came to squirt his hose at it
but the basement let rip a huge fart of contempt
& the poor fireman ran back home startled
later he was found doing stomach crunches
trying to smile nonchalant at his bedroom mirror

artists came next and cried into it
they cried a really long time
but the tears seemed to soak straight thru
& disappeared somewhere far away

to the artists’ sad astonishment
the fire kept on burning
finally the critics asked them all
to move on please
worried about the psychological effect upon the children
who were already stroking their handguns in anticipation
the politician’s spokesperson
came & said it was
prob’ly best if we turned our
attention elsewhere hey have u seen the
economic growth for this quarter

but people kept on crowding around
all the rubbernecking made it quite difficult to get to work

but then a representative came around
in a red car
people thought she was gunna pour
the coke into the basement
& try to douse the fire
but instead she challenged them all
to choose their favourite taste

nearly everyone went home to put the different colas
under closer scrutiny

it still hasn’t been established
whether or not the fire has gone out

the girl in the poster
beams
down on the world
a body of light in the air
who is she?

she
with her comparative clause
grasping
where there is the greatest strength to grasp
there
the grasping may only happen

her face & body two dimensional
lacking depth
lacking time
she is noone
being for us all
causing smiles to flatten out
to meet her face
the strength to grasp is there
being grasped
those that grasp
it is all there
grasping & its strength

she stands out
is looked at
made again within each mind
& for each mind
standing for each mind

there is a place for her
an absent place
a being of another plane
being not of any plane

the poster stands in its light
smiling
shining

there

Heart Book 12

Noone could ever have known but it was growing again

under all that rubbish
under all that light
something was stirring

horribly

in years to come it would blot out everything else
in a form that nobody would have understood

within all that light
something red and heavy was waiting
gathering strength from a litter of words & feelings

it was getting strong

breaking thru all the white bars
that tried to hold it back

and this time nothing could stop it
because this time it fed on nothing but itself

Heart Book 11

man, the rain that was falling down outside
was hearts
was a million tiny little falling hearts
red hearts fucken everywhere
backing up the sewers
and breaking umbrellas
squelchy, messy little wet hearts
falling from the angry sky
and drowning everything with colour
they kept on falling down & down
a million tiny falling hearts
kept on falling
drowning

everywhere outside it’s raining
little hearts just falling everywhere
& it’s fucken meant to be summer

Heart Book 10

they planted something in that deep velvet hole
& covered it over with warm soil
they shdn’t have done it
but they did
it slowly began to grow
day after day
in the darkness of those depths
it began to stir
butting towards the air
yes i think it began to grow right there
it wasn’t going to be pretty
when it happened

Heart Book 9

the sky was still so blue
it shone briskly above a blackened deadened heart

it was lying there on the ground
and all the tears, the anger
all the empty sushi trays and pigeon shit
covered it til it was all but hidden

the sky kept on speaking its blueness
and noone could see death anymore

once the credit ran out on the mobile phone
there was really nothing left to say

Heart Book 8

that red heart just kept on pumping
pumping
pumping
it kept on doing the same thing for so long
that most people lost interest
and changed the channel
catching up on Australian Idol
noone cared too much about its deep redness
or the purity and passion it longed to represent

the writers soon realized that hearts are boring
and applied to have it surgically removed

everybody was much happier after that
